Kaiser Permanente’s integrated care model helps researchers in this study. Pre-pregnancy, during-pregnancy and after-pregnancy care are all received by participants at the same Kaiser Permanente facility, with access to the same electronic medical records.
Plus, the baby’s care and records are also maintained at the same Kaiser Permanente facility where mom is seen. This ensures good continuity of care, as well as collection of good data.
A diabetes prevention program like this, for women with gestational diabetes, wouldn’t be feasible for women receiving pregnancy and postpartum care in different places. It’s only possible because Kaiser Permanente offers continuous care for women, from prenatal care to pregnancy to postpartum care and on to family care, all with the same provider.
