What is your current role?
I serve as the Senior Operations Leader for Analytics and also Nurse Scientist for National Patient Care Services at Kaiser Permanente (KP) [Program Office]. I’m also an Assistant Professor at the UCSF School of Nursing within the Community Health Systems Department. I oversee the National Nursing Research strategy at KP, aligning research data analytics with organizational priorities across multiple regions. Additionally, I chair the Research and Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) Council, collaborating with various councils to support patient care and nursing outcomes through analytics and data science.
What did you do after the fellowship program?
I transitioned from KPNC to UCSF Health, where I directed the nurses’ EBP Fellowship program and led Nursing Quality. I returned to KP in 2021 to help establish a research and analytics infrastructure aimed at bolstering nursing research within the organization.
How do you use Delivery Science in your current job?
The relationships and insights gained from the fellowship provided a solid foundation that has facilitated my success at both UCSF Health and now back at KP. Formulating research questions that are relevant to clinical and translational applications, which ultimately leads to evidence-informed operational and clinical decisions, has been critical to my career success. Some of my work during the fellowship program has led to current collaborations and projects in the areas of Falls Risk Assessment models, Nurse Wellbeing, and new graduate nurse resiliency and self-efficacy.
What are key learnings from your time as a fellow at DOR?
One essential lesson is the necessity of integrating delivery science research with operational frameworks to ensure successful outcomes. Also, building partnerships with operational stakeholders is crucial for the success of research initiatives. Research is critical to an organization’s success but without the support, the study cannot be successful. Additionally, the ongoing importance of mentorship throughout my career and maintaining connections with my mentors from the Delivery Science Fellowship has been vital.
What do you do for fun?
I enjoy spending quality time with my family, particularly the outdoors and singing/dancing to K-pop. I also enjoy running and find it to be a great outlet for stress relief and excitement.
Any advice for early-stage investigators?
Make a meaningful impact on care delivery by partnering with the right stakeholders, particularly within nursing when patient care is involved. Securing support from nursing professionals is vital to avoid potential roadblocks and maximize available resources.
