The Division of Research of Kaiser Permanente Northern California (KPNC DOR) seeks an investigator with strong epidemiologic, health services, and/or delivery science expertise interested in gastrointestinal diseases, including hepatology and/or gastrointestinal malignancies. This individual will be expected, after an initial period with support (as needed), to develop an independently funded research program, conduct scholarly research that is recognized nationally and internationally, and collaborate with Kaiser Permanente clinicians and leadership in evaluating or developing interventions to enhance the delivery of evidence-based care. The investigator may be appointed at DOR equivalents to the assistant professor, associate professor, or professor-equivalent levels.
Investigators in the KPNC DOR draw on rich clinical data derived from a comprehensive state-of-the-art electronic medical record and enjoy direct access to a diverse population of >4.5 million members afforded by its location within KPNC. The DOR has more than 70 research scientists based in Pleasanton who lead well-developed programs in cancer, cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, health care delivery and policy, behavioral health and aging, infectious diseases, and women’s and children’s health. DOR investigators are primarily supported by grant and contract funding from federal and other external sources, especially the National Institutes of Health, National Cancer Institute, and the Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute.
The successful candidate will join an established, collegial research team of investigators at the DOR: the Collaborative Health Outcomes Research in Digestive Diseases (CHORD) group. CHORD is a transdisciplinary diverse team which includes multi-center collaborations; it has been supported by >46 funded awards since 2002, including more than 25 NIH, NCI and other federal grants/contracts. The group’s research interests include fundamental risk factor epidemiology in emerging diseases; broad-based disease pathway discovery in genetic and metabolic epidemiology; early disease detection, complex pharmacoepidemiology, including U.S. Food and Drug Administration collaborations; randomized trials and multi-level investigations into clinical care pathways. These have resulted in multiple first and senior author publications in the New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA, Annals of Internal Medicine and leading epidemiology and specialty journals. Current research also includes delivery science and implementation research for accelerating clinical change and developing learning healthcare systems.
The investigator is expected to spend the majority of his/her time on research in gastrointestinal diseases, which can include hepatology and/or gastrointestinal malignancies, patient-centered outcomes, patient decision-making, clinical effectiveness, delivery science, and dissemination/implementation research. The successful candidate is expected to, after an initial period with support (as needed), develop their own externally funded research portfolio, collaborate with physicians and program leaders within Kaiser Permanente, work with other DOR researchers, and develop national and international collaborations to advance research in gastrointestinal diseases.
Preferred qualifications include an MD equivalent who also has appropriate research training (masters, PhD, and/or fellowship in epidemiology, public health, health services, or delivery science research) OR a PhD equivalent (in clinical epidemiology, public health, health services, or delivery sciences research). The successful candidate should have a proven track record of independent scholarly publications in the peer-reviewed medical literature, demonstrated history of collaboration, strong methodologic expertise, and experience working with electronic medical record data. For MDs, opportunities for clinical practice are available, as it is desirable that the successful candidate remain connected with patient care.
