Feasibility and impact of a social needs screening and resource navigation program on healthcare utilization for adult patients with lung cancer

Social needs affect nearly one-third of patients with cancer within KPNC and are associated with increased acute care use, missed appointments, and worse overall mortality compared to patients who do not face social needs. This study will develop a pilot workflow to deploy point-of-care social needs screening and resource navigation for patients with lung cancer at KP SF and Oakland who are high risk for social needs as measured by the validated FFH score. We will measure feasibility, emergency room utilization, and appointment no-show rates.

Social and Financial Resources in Cancer Care

The goal of this study is to characterize barriers and facilitators to seeking financial and social support as well as the impact of such support for patients of underrepresented minority backgrounds diagnosed with lung cancer. The researchers will interview patients and caregivers with non-small cell lung cancer regarding their experiences identifying, applying for, and utilizing social and financial support during their cancer treatment.

Cancer Clinical Trials Enrollment

Access to clinical trials is an important part of cancer treatment. However, only about 2-3% of all patients diagnosed with cancer enroll in clinical trials. This study will evaluate sociodemographic, clinical, and structural predictors of enrollment into an interventional clinical trial for adult KPNC members diagnosed with any stage of a hematologic or solid tumor between 2017 and 2023. Understanding current patient, provider, and site-specific gaps in enrollment will allow for the development of targeted interventions to streamline and increase trial enrollment.
