Douglas A. Corley, MD, PhD

Douglas A. Corley, MD, PhD, is The Permanente Medical Group’s Chief Research Officer and has been a research scientist at the Kaiser Permanente Northern California Division of Research since 2002. He is also a board-certified gastroenterologist who practices at the Kaiser Permanente, San Francisco Medical Center.

Dr. Corley has expertise in building collaborative, transdisciplinary diverse teams; developing large clinical and translational research programs; and educational development. Through multi-center, team-based collaborations and a series of over 46 funded awards, including more than 22 NIH, NCI and other federal grants/contracts, his research includes fundamental risk factor epidemiology in emerging diseases; broad-based disease pathway discovery in genetic and metabolic epidemiology; complex pharmacoepidemiology, including US Food and Drug Administration collaborations that modified drug safety labeling; identification and reduction of demographic disparities in medical care outcomes; randomized trials and multi-level investigations into clinical care pathways. These have resulted in multiple first and senior author publications in the New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA, Annals of Internal Medicine and leading epidemiology and specialty journals. He has been the co-Editor-in-Chief of a leading specialty journal (Gastroenterology) and co-led efforts to modify journalistic practices to increase equity in publications.

In addition to federal grants, he co-led securing funding and infrastructure development at Kaiser Permanente for a novel regional physician researcher program, integration of the Delivery Science and Applied Research program (DARE), and development of an enterprise-level Learning Health Initiative to accelerate high-volume practice change, improve value, and increase care value.  Funded by The Permanente Medical Group, these efforts identify modifiable challenges likely to influence patient and system outcomes, develop collaborations between clinicians and traditional full-time scientists/epidemiologists, uses extremely large data sources for relevant research, and develop mechanisms for rapid implementation (and re-evaluation) of research findings and intervention outcomes.

After completing medical school at the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Corley completed an internal medicine residency at the Brigham & Women’s Hospital of the Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts; and a gastroenterology fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). Dr. Corley subsequently obtained a master’s degree in public health and a doctorate in epidemiology at the University of California, Berkeley, School of Public Health. Prior to joining the Division of Research, he was on the full-time gastroenterology faculty at UCSF, where he was the chief of the UCSF GI Faculty Practice; he is currently a UCSF Professor of Clinical Medicine (non-salaried).
