Costales, Brianna

Brianna Costales, PhD, is a research fellow with the National Institute of Mental Health T32 program. She received her doctorate in Pharmaceutical Sciences with specialization in pharmacoepidemiology from the University of Florida, where her dissertation was funded by a Mental Health Research Dissertation Grant to Enhance Workforce Diversity from NIMH. She previously worked in neuroscience phase I-IV clinical trial research.

Dr. Costales is broadly interested in optimizing outcomes in mental health care and pharmacotherapy. Her research focuses on drug safety and ascertainment of clinically relevant psychiatric adverse events resulting from medication use in real-world settings. She aims to apply her research to improving early detection, prevention, and management of safety risks as a means of maximizing patient benefit and minimizing disruptions to care. Her prior research focused on medical cannabis use, and she is also interested in the long-term effects of chronic cannabis use.

Real-World Evidence for Potential Suicidality Risk with Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 Receptor Agonists
This project will estimate the incidence of new onset suicidality among adults following initiation of a monotherapy glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist (GLP-1RA) medication and to investigate the risk of suicidality with GLP-1RA medications among new users of a monotherapy GLP-1RA drug.
