For most breast cancer patients, treatment will include surgery to remove the tumor. For some women and men, the best option will be a mastectomy — the surgical removal of the full breast. For decades, most mastectomy patients spent at least one night in the hospital to recover from their surgery.
But as surgical techniques and patient care improve, a growing number of hospitals are making it possible for mastectomy patients to go home the same day as their surgery.
Today, 92% of mastectomy patients treated at a hospital in Kaiser Permanente Northern California recover at home after surgery.
Breast Cancer Awareness Month provides an important opportunity to look at advances in breast cancer treatment and patient care.
