The Division of Research’s Biostatistical Consulting Unit (BSCU), under the direction of Juleon Rabbani, DrPH, provides biostatistical and programming support to Kaiser Permanente Northern California clinician investigators. The BSCU staff includes biostatisticians, a clinician-investigator consultant, programmers, project managers and research assistants.

We provide the following services:

Resident research: IRB application development for research proposals, exemption requests and quality-improvement proposals (feasibility data, methods, analytic plan, sample size/power estimates), programming, data analysis, statistical interpretation of results, and presentation and manuscript support.

Community Health research proposals: Application development and refinement (feasibility data, methods, analytic plan, sample size/power estimates, and budget). If funded, BSCU provides programming, project management, recruitment, data entry, and biostatistical support throughout the study, including conference presentations and manuscript submission.

Brief biostatistical consults: Clinicians may request a free consultation with experienced BSCU staff, including advice on statistical methods, power and sample size estimation, interpretation of results, and recommendations for revising biostatistical methodology sections in publication drafts.

Feasibility data: Identification of appropriate data sources for cohort ascertainment and estimates of the number of eligible study subjects for potential studies.

Survey assistance: Consultation and development of electronic surveys (Survey Monkey) for funded studies (including studies supported by resident research funds).

Programming: Support for funded projects and KPNC regional programs.
