The Division of Research of The Permanente Medical Group of Kaiser Permanente Northern California seeks an early-stage investigator with experience in the epidemiology of urologic cancers and/or benign urological diseases. This individual will be expected to develop an independently-funded research program, conduct scholarly research that is recognized nationally and internationally, and collaborate with other Division of Research investigators and Kaiser Permanente clinicians and operational leadership in areas related to urologic cancers and/or benign urological diseases.
The Division of Research is located in the heart of the vibrant San Francisco Bay Area, occupying a five-story office building in downtown Oakland, in close proximity to organizational headquarters for Kaiser Permanente. The Division of Research has more than 50 research scientists who lead research programs in cancer, cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, health care delivery and policy, behavioral health and aging, infectious diseases, and women’s and children’s health. DOR investigators are supported primarily by grant and contract funding from federal and other external peer-reviewed sources, especially the National Institutes of Health.
The placement of the Division of Research within one of the oldest and largest integrated health care delivery systems in the US enhances the ability to conduct population sciences research, from etiologic studies through dissemination and implementation research. Investigators in the Division of Research draw on rich clinical data derived from a comprehensive state-of-the-art electronic medical record, disease registries (e.g., cancer, diabetes) and associated clinical and administrative databases, and enjoy direct access to a diverse population of more than 4.5 million members afforded by its location within Kaiser Permanente Northern California. The Division of Research also participates in the Health Care Systems Research Network, providing the opportunity to conduct research in partner research organizations affiliated with health care systems. It is also a participant in research networks that focus on cancer, addictions and substance abuse, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, mental health, vaccine safety, and other areas – each of which provide the opportunity for collaboration within a rich consortium of researchers and health care systems. Opportunities for collaboration are also available with area academic institutions such as UCSF, UC Berkeley, UC Davis, and Stanford University. Division of Research scientists collaborate with scientists at these and other institutions across the nation and the world.
This Research Scientist position calls for relevant expertise in epidemiology of urologic cancers and/or in benign urological diseases. In addition to epidemiology, a candidate may also have expertise in other research areas and methods. The specific areas in which the successful candidate may work should complement content areas of interest to Division of Research investigators and interest in collaborations with Kaiser Permanente Northern California clinical and operations leaders.
Preferred qualifications include a PhD or equivalent in epidemiology, health services research, or a related field. A clinical degree along with a master’s degree in a research field may also be appropriate. The successful candidate should have a proven track record of obtaining peer-reviewed research grants from the National Institutes of Health, American Cancer Society, or comparable funding organizations; first-authored and collaborative publications in the peer-reviewed medical literature; an interest in or a demonstrated record of collaboration in research with clinical partners or health systems operational leaders. Evidence of current funding from peer-reviewed grants is highly desirable, as is experience conducting research projects within health systems and that use data from electronic medical records.
