Charpignon, Marie

Marie Charpignon, PhD, is a postdoctoral research fellow in delivery science and clinical informatics at the Kaiser Permanente Northern California Division of Research.

Her work integrates methods from causal inference, statistical learning, and network science to evaluate the effects of pharmaceutical interventions, social policies, and exogenous shocks on people’s health and behavior – with a particular focus on aging and vulnerable populations, including adolescents and minority groups.

Dr. Charpignon earned her PhD in Social & Engineering Systems and Statistics from MIT, and her MSc in Computational and Mathematical Engineering from Stanford University. Her dissertation investigated the potential of repurposing antidiabetic and antihypertensive medications to prevent or delay the onset of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias, through the retrospective analysis of electronic health record data. At the Division of Research, she is expanding this research to examine additional commonly prescribed drug classes (e.g., obesity medications, antidepressants) and their associations with neurological, psychiatric, and cardiovascular diseases.

Before returning to graduate school, Dr. Charpignon worked as a data scientist at Microsoft Education, where she studied the role of technology use and digital collaboration in student academic performance, socio-emotional learning, and well-being. This experience taught her the importance of public-private partnerships and sparked her passion for translational research that informs both practice and policy.
