Ramirez, Cynthia N.

Cynthia N. Ramirez, PhD, MPH, is a postdoctoral research fellow at the Kaiser Permanente Northern California Division of Research within the Behavioral Health, Aging & Infectious Diseases (BHA&ID) Section. She is particularly interested in applying mixed methods approaches for evaluating health disparities in the fields of infectious disease, cancer, and transgender health.

Prior to joining Kaiser Permanente, Dr. Ramirez was the recipient of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality’s Health Services Research Dissertation Award (R36). Her dissertation work used mixed methods to examine the association of documentation status with avoidable emergency department visits in Los Angeles’s largest safety net hospital. Dr. Ramirez also has extensive experience conducting health disparities research across the cancer care continuum. Dr. Ramirez received her training from the University of Southern California with a BS in 2015, an MPH with a concentration in Epidemiology and Biostatistics in 2016, and a PhD in Preventive Medicine with a concentration in Health Behavior Research in 2023.

Preventable Hospitalizations and Emergency Department Visits Among Transgender and Gender Diverse Adults

This study is a cross-sectional examination of the prevalence of potentially preventable hospitalizations and emergency department encounters for ambulatory care sensitive conditions in a large sample of adult transgender and gender diverse (TGD) adults and non-TGD persons at KPNC. The study will also contextualize factors that influence disparities in care access for TGD persons using qualitative interviews.
