Connie Weisner, DrPH, MSW, is a research scientist at the Kaiser Permanente Northern California Division of Research; and professor emeritus at the Department of Psychiatry, University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Weisner has a doctorate in public health from the University of California, Berkeley and a master's in social work from the University of Minnesota. Her research focus is on integration of addiction and mental health services in health systems and addresses access, treatment outcome, and cost-effectiveness of alcohol and drug treatment.

Dr. Weisner is a member of the International Expert Advisory Group on Alcohol and Drug Dependence of the World Health Organization, and a former member of the National Advisory Councils of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, and MacArthur Network on Mental Health and the Law. She has also been a member of the DHHS National Advisory Council of the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment. She has participated on several Institute of Medicine committees, including the Crossing the Quality Chasm's series' Improving the Quality of Health Care for Mental and Substance-Use Conditions, Broadening the Base of Alcohol Problems, and Prevention, Diagnosis, Treatment and Management of Substance Use Disorders in the U.S. Armed Forces. She was a section editor of the recent Surgeon General's Report, Facing Addition in America: Alcohol, Drugs and Health. She is one of the Principal Investigators of the Health Systems Node of NIDA's Clinical Trials Network.

Dr. Weisner's published work includes studies of epidemiology of alcohol and drug problems; the interaction among alcohol, drug, mental health and medical problems; and the outcomes and cost-effectiveness of treatment services. She has received MERIT Awards from NIAAA and NIDA. Her grants include NIAAA, NIDA, and RWJF research grants that study the cost and effectiveness of alcohol and drug treatment interventions.

Kaiser Permanente Northern California (KPNC) Alcohol Registry

This study will increase our understanding of the development of alcohol use disorders (AUD) and recovery from AUD, including factors that affect the likelihood of recovery success, such as quantity of alcohol consumed and the involvement of health and substance abuse comorbidities (NOT-AA-20-22) and treatment. The registry makes use of the annual Alcohol as a Vital Sign screening in primary care, and other health care data (e.g., demographics, comorbidities, pharmacy).

Primary Care-Based Interventions to Reduce Alcohol Use among HIV Patients

This randomized clinical trial uses a health plan’s electronic medical record (EMR) alcohol screen and examines innovative behavioral interventions and their cost effectiveness for hazardous drinking within a large HIV primary care clinic.

Integrating Addiction Research in Health Systems: the Addiction Research Network

The overall goal of the Addictions Research Network (ARN) node of the Clinical Trials Network is to conduct research to improve outcomes in all patients with substance use disorders (SUDs) who are seen in medical settings. The ARN includes 15 large health systems across the U.S. that use the Health Care Systems Research Network (HCSRN) Virtual Data Warehouse.
