Kaiser Permanente research scientist who studies modifiable risk factors for obesity and cancer-related metabolic diseases is one of 10 early- to mid-career professionals chosen in 2023
The National Academy of Medicine selected Elizabeth Cespedes Feliciano, ScD, a research scientist at the Kaiser Permanente Northern California Division of Research, as one of its 2023 Emerging Leaders in Health and Medicine Scholars.
“This program provides an exceptional opportunity not only to learn from current National Academy of Medicine members, but to contribute to its programming,” said Cespedes Feliciano. “One of the aspects that most excites me is the chance to network and collaborate with emerging leaders in different sectors of health and medicine from my own cohort and past Emerging Leaders in Health and Medicine cohorts.”
Feliciano’s research focuses on identifying, understanding, and intervening on modifiable risk factors for obesity and cancer-related metabolic diseases. Her studies have found that a cancer diagnosis hastens aging in women; women with obesity were less likely to receive their full recommended chemotherapy dose; and that body composition is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease in normal weight breast cancer survivors.
Started in 2016, the Emerging Leaders in Health and Medicine Program is designed to increase the National Academy of Medicine’s engagement with exceptional, interdisciplinary early- to mid-career professionals working in biomedical science, population health, health care, health policy, and related fields. The program facilitates opportunities for mentorship, collaboration, and innovation between the emerging leaders, National Academy of Medicine members, and medical experts.

The Emerging Leaders scholars are an essential part of a major initiative to provide a platform for a new generation of leaders to advance science, combat persistent challenges in health and medicine, and spark transformative change in health care. Individuals selected by NAM leadership for the 2023 class will engage in a variety of activities throughout the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine over a 3-year term.

The National Academy of Medicine, established in 1970 as the Institute of Medicine, is an independent organization of eminent professionals from diverse fields including health and medicine; the natural, social, and behavioral sciences; and beyond. It serves alongside the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Engineering as an adviser to the nation and the international community. Through its domestic and global initiatives, the NAM works to address critical issues in health, medicine, and related policy and inspire positive action across sectors. The NAM collaborates closely with its peer academies and other divisions within the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine.
